Bearded Dragon Lighting Setup: What Actually Matters

Let’s cut the crap. Your bearded dragon doesn’t care how “aesthetic” your enclosure looks on Instagram. It cares about not dying. And that starts with lighting that doesn’t suck.

1. UVB – The Non-Negotiable

Bearded dragons need UVB like you need oxygen. No UVB? Welcome to Metabolic Bone Disease – the reptile version of your joints going to hell.

· - Best option: T5 HO UVB tube, 10.0 strength. Mount it inside the enclosure.

· - Brand to trust: Arcadia or Zoo Med. Everything else is wish.com-tier.

2. Basking Bulb – Give ‘Em the Heat

Basking temp should hit 100–110°F. Don’t microwave them. Don’t lukewarm them.

· - Use a basking bulb or a halogen flood bulb (not a regular incandescent).

Distance From Basking Spot Recommended Wattage

6-8 Inches 50W-75W

8-12 Inches 75W-100W

12-16 Inches 100W-150W

**Skip the red bulbs. Your dragon’s not a club DJ**

3. Placement – This Ain’t Rocket Science

· - Basking bulb and UVB should overlap. This is called a thermal gradient, not a science experiment.

· - Cool side: ~75–85°F. Night temps can dip to 65°F—don’t panic.

4. Timers – Because You Have a Life

Set both lights on a 12-hour timer. You don’t need to play lizard god every morning.

Wrap It Up:

Stop overcomplicating it. Good UVB, proper basking heat, solid placement, and automation. That’s it. Your beardie doesn’t need a spa; it needs survival-grade lighting.
